Pictures of Kids from a favela

These are some of my favorite pictures that I took in a favela in Joao Pessoa in the Northeast of Brazil, in 2004.

The first day with Jonas at our house!
Jonas' new bike!

Becoming "parents"

These are the two kids God has given us to take care of. As you can see from this picture, they have many issues to deal with. They love each other, but don't know how to show it, not to each other, and not to anyone else...but the love God has for them is beyond our comprehension, and this love is reaching out to them....through us.
Mario Jr and I with the two boys (Jonas and Jose Neilson or Ze') that were chosen to receive the scholarship to go to camp (Jonas and Jose Neilson...both of them have fathers in prison).
Here in Jonas presenting a song along with the other "King's Kids" (notice the image is foggy because I was far
and my camera's zoom is not very good...but notice how Jonas was making sure we were cute!)
Jonas' favorite position is goali (not sure how to spell that).
and ironically, so it Ze's...
This is Talita, she has been with us only a couple months now, she ran away from a goverment center where she was being beaten, and came home to her grandfather (who is sick and can't take care of her), so he called us and begged us to take we did. She is living in our home.
Bed time story for Talita...
This is a party we had at the base for the DTS students. It's sort of like a "red- neck" party and everyone has to dress silly...even Jonas participated and loved it!
